About Us

The Western HAZ is an inter-agency initiative which covers the Western Health and Services Board area in the west of Northern Ireland. It is funded by the DHSSPS.

The area has one city, Derry/Londonderry, some small towns and a scattered rural population. In this part of the site you can find out where you can contact us, who we are, the principles on which the HAZ is based and a full profile of the Western Area.

We are keen to know how useful you find the site so we can tailor it to your needs. Please get in touch using the ' Contact us ' button, or by phone, fax or e-mail using the details in ' Where to find us.

In September 2000, the (External) Western Health & Social Services Board submitted a proposal for HAZ status, entitled "All Together Now", to the (External) Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS). The proposal was based on discussions among statutory, local authority and voluntary/community representatives on key health and social issues facing the Western area.

The HAZ proposed a Board-wide approach to addressing high levels of disadvantage and inequality which would enable the HAZ to implement change at both strategic and local level. The target groups identified for the HAZ were older people and [families living in] poverty. The DHSSPS accepted the proposal and the Western Health Action Zone was established.
