The designations below give a rough guide to help you to choose material for your classes. Many of the publications designed for older pupils can be used as a teacher's handbook for teaching younger children.

Full instructions included (with ideas for adapting modern dress to simulate historical costume) and a brief history of the National School System, along with lessons which may be photocopied.
The National Schools 1831-1921 KS3

A unit of work [8-10 weeks] for 1st year secondary pupils which uses a wide variety of primary sources, photographs, etc. to build up a comprehensive picture of the Irish National School system - an educational system so successful that it was copied completely in New South Wales in the 19th century.
This can be a teacher's handbook for younger classes.
Titanic KS3

An 8-10 week course of study for KS3 pupils. This pack examines the period (early 1900s), the vessel's construction, the voyage, the disaster and its aftermath. An excellent exercise in the use of historical evidence.

An introduction to some Old Irish Countryside Games - by Andrew Steven. This illustrated booklet describes some of the lesser known traditional games for the benefit of children, school teachers and youth club organisers. It tells of distinctively Irish forms of 'skittles', where heavy logs are thrown at target pins; quoit-throwing (forbidden by the Statutes of Kilkenny in 1366, but is still to be found played in workplaces in lunch-hour competitions).Three types of quoit-playing are described as surviving into the present day. Sheaf-tossing, horseshoe throwing and road bowls (or 'bullets') are also well organised sports in some areas.
