About the Installation
The three-dimensional overhead installation is made of some 2,000 individual pieces, the culmination of eighteen months of work by over twenty groups, including those with visual and hearing impairments, ethnic minority groups, senior citizens, and adults and young people with learning difficulties.
Sharon's long-held fascination with birds in flight, their movement patterns, complex social behaviour, individuality and commonality was the inspiration behind this work.
In a series of workshops, participants created these individual pieces in porcelain clay. Sharon then kiln fired every piece and spent most the next six months working in the galleries, choosing, threading and placing each piece.
The resulting installation is an intuitively crafted major work, interpreting the myriad personal creative statements of those 'unseen' in society. Their silent words swirl, swoop, glide and cascade in the precarious freedom and fun of flying alone, together and in communication with us all.
Here you can see just a few of the imaginative pieces produced for the exhibition.
