National Museums Northern Ireland intends to develop a comprehensive story of emigration. Based on the foundations already in place at the Ulster American Folk Park, we will establish a National Museum of Emigration telling the story of all people leaving Ireland for all parts of the world. We will develop a specialist collection devoted to emigration and settlement. The first step will be a feasibility study and integrated masterplan to ensure that the highest standards are met in caring both for the collections and for our visitors.
This wide-ranging story will emphasise the role of those who in the course of the last three centuries left Ireland on a permanent basis, to have profound impact on the history, culture, economy and development of their adopted homelands. It will be told through a variety of methods, including interaction. It will be relevant to the Curriculum, to the international audience that takes such pride in its Irish roots, and through partnerships like those with the Scotch-Irish Trust and the Centre for Migration Studies , to a specialist audience with an interest in genealogy.
